BRACKNELL Town defeated Binfield 3-1 on Tuesday night to book their place in the semi-finals of the Bluefin Sport Hellenic League Cup, writes Dave Wright.

But the Robins were pushed all the way by the Moles and it wasn’t until the last 10 minutes when they sealed victory thanks to goals from Adam Cornell and TJ Bohane.

It was Bohane’s second goal of the game and they take him on to 42 in a Bracknell shirt, the same total as Cornell.

Eighty-four goals by two strikers is an astonishing achievement and they still have time to top the 100 mark.

Binfield were losing to their local rivals for the fourth time this season and they will meet again in one, possibly two, cup finals in the next few weeks.

The visitors did their best to stem Town’s free-scoring forwards, only to run out of steam in the closing stages of this entertaining quarter-final tie in front of a 250 plus crowd.

Robins manager Mark Tallentire said: “It was an interesting game.

“I thought in the first half we were quite a lot better than them and deservedly went in a goal to the good, but they did a lot better in the second half.

“We played into their hands a little, which was a bit disappointing, as it was harder for us to get the ball out of defence.

“They made us go a bit longer, which suited them, and the consequences of that, they got themselves back into the game.”

He continued: “Just for once this season when we have played them, they (Binfield) were actually a bit better than us for 15 to 25 minutes in the second half.

“They made it a bit harder than they normally do, but we stayed solid and kept ourselves in the game,.

“I thought we would get some opportunities and that’s what happened. In the end it was a good evening’s work for us.”

Moles boss Roger Herridge was pleased with his side’s work rate on the night, saying: “There wasn’t a player in a yellow shirt who didn’t put in a decent shift. We put an awful lot into the game .

“Once Ferdy (Liam Ferdinand) had got our goal, I thought we would go on to win. We had a good spell, but couldn’t score.

“It all came down to the last 10 minutes and they (Bracknell) had that extra bit of fitness that won the game for them.”

There were six minutes remaining when Cornell made it 2-1, tapping in a right-wing cross from Seb Bowerman shortly after the winger had switched flanks, and two minutes later Bohane put the issue beyond doubt.

He had opened the scoring in the 38th minute when he held off three opponents to slot past new keeper Joel Driscoll.

But that goal was cancelled out by Ferdinand, his 36th of the season, in the 67th minute following good work by Brad Pagliaroli.

The Robins join Highworth, Headington Amateurs and Brimscombe & Thrupp in the last four.

So there could be another clash between Bracknell and Brimscombe, who meet in Gloucestershire this Saturday.

Town must win both of their remaining two league games to keep alive their outside chances of lifting the title.

“This is a massive game for us, one we know we have to win,” concluded Tallentire. Binfield complete their home fixtures against tail-enders Henley, while fourth-bottom Ascot United travel to Tuffley Rovers.
