CHRIS Day is looking to boost Ascot United FC’s involvement in the local community following his switch from Bracknell Town, writes Dave Wright.

During his seven years at Larges Lane, he helped them to increase their youth section from six to 20 teams.

He started out as manager of one of their boys’ squads, then became chairman of their youth section and, later, chairman of the whole club.

The American was behind their plans to move to a new ground, but they fell through and so the club decided to redevelop Larges Lane.

Then local businessman Kayne Steinborn Busse came on board and, with his family joining him, he took a dominant role in the club’s future.

And Day decided it was time for him to move on.

“When Ascot United came to hear about this they offered me the chance to join them and I am now looking forward to a new challenge,” said the Texan who originally came to England with the US Air Force.

His roles will initially include reviewing the club’s IT system and processes, exploring opportunities for facility improvement, and producing a social media strategy for the club.

Day, a former employee at Dell Computers, added: “The club has some really good strengths and I want to help them grow. It is important we take advantage of the large youth programme they have here.

“We want to create a good community atmosphere and allow young players to develop and continue on to the first team.

“It is a big challenge and one I am really looking forward to taking on.”

Ascot chairman Mike Harrison said: “We need to make a lot of changes and improvements in the way we do things at the club. Chris’s experience will be invaluable and we are all looking forward to working with him.”

On the pitch, things are not going too well for the Yellamen these days.

Last Saturday they lost 1-0 at Division One East side Chalfont Wasps in the Hellenic League Supplementary Cup and then on Tuesday they went down 2-1 to Henley Town, who arrived at The Racecourse ground having taken only one point from their previous 11 away games.

United conceded goals to James Spruyt (30mins) and Seve Mayberry (71) before pulling one back through substitute Matt Forder in stoppage time.

Henley, who have moved off the bottom of the table, played with 10 men for the last 30 minutes after having Loirdan Daka sent off for two bookable offences.
