BINFIELD FC scored five goals for the second successive Saturday as they defeated Longlevens 5-0 at Hill Farm Lane, writes Dave Wright.

It was a more impressive performance than they had produced against Sandhurst with the pitch nowhere as near as heavy.

“Full credit to (groundsmen) Mick Baldrey and Bobby Ellis for getting the game on,” said manager Roger Herridge.

“The pitch was always going to get cut up, but it stood up well.”

The Moles never looked back after being gifted a second-minute goal.

Longlevens’ defence got into a mess and, as they made a hash of attempting to clear, it was Adam Phillips who was credited with the own goal.

Moles doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark when centre-back Jeff Brown headed home his first goal for the club.

Binfield, who had won 5-3 at Longlevens two months ago, continued to dictate although it did need a timely clearance by Alex Luis to deny the visitors a clear-cut chance.

They had another let-off when keeper Mo Nyamunga clattered cluttered into Brad Vanstone, but Longlevens’ appeals for a penalty were turned down.

Even Herridge admitted it should have been a spot kick.

The hosts made it 3-0 just a minute into the second half through Jon Bennett with his shot wrong-footing keeper Luke Merchant as it took a deflection off a defender.

Liam Ferdinand added the fourth on 70 minutes, taking his tally for the season to 28 in 31 games.

The Gloucestershire side did not give up and a rasping drive from Darren Ofoe was brilliantly tripped over the bar by Nyamunga.

But most of the goalmouth action was at the other end, with 18-year-old Liam Whyte, having come off the bench, having three shots blocked in quick succession.

“All credit to him. He showed great desire to get into those (scoring) positions from midfield,” commented Herridge.

The manager also praised another of his substitutes, Sean Moore, after seeing him lob home the fifth goal late in the game.

“He’s got a lot of quality,” said Herridge.

Binfield, who remain seventh in the table, are away to third-bottom Oxford City Nomads tonight (Wednesday, 7.45pm ko) before going to FA Trophy quarter-finalists Newport Pagnell Town in the semi-finals of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy on Saturday (3pm ko).

The winners will meet Bracknell Town in the final.
