THE season starts now for Farnham Royal with a new skipper in allowing Javed Khan to concentrate on his game and it paid dividends immediately.

Warren Miller was back as captain, with the full backing of Khan, and they came close to a thrilling victory against title chasing High Wycombe.

Khan himself is relieved to have the pressure off and during that game he produced his best batting performance of the summer as he hit 58 in Royal"s 283-9 as they batted out their 66 overs.

He remarked: 'I stepped down as captain, I wasn"t performing and I couldn"t concentrate on cricket if outside of the boundary I was doing everything.

'I spoke to Warren and said "I will back you" and take the captaincy, the last game Warren was skipper and we changed everything.'

'I stayed in for 80 or 90 balls and batted well.

'I want to give something back to my club, I don"t want to not perform and it"s been proved in the last game it was for the best.'

Khan added: 'Warren is very happy and I think we are all very happy.

'The beginning of the season is now. We were close to winning against a top team but it was a very, very good game that we all enjoyed.'

Miller, who last captained the side back in the summer of 2007, commented: 'It"s not ideal, if things were going well then I would not be captain but it needed to be done and I"m happy to do it.

'It seemed to work out in the first week.'

He added: 'We"re still a fairly long way adrift but we"ve got to take it one game at a time, if we can take hope from Saturday and move on, that would be good.

'We"ve got to believe, there is still a long way to go. We are a bit adrift but it is bunched above Slough. We have got to keep believing and if guys can step up each week then we can do it.'

Royal will be looking to take some confidence into tomoorw"s (Saturday"s) clash at home to Radlett as they will be hoping to end the first half of a disappointing campaign on a high note.
