SLOUGH Town returned to winning form in the National League South after a 1-0 victory away at Chelmsford City on Saturday.

The Rebels had suffered defeat in both their matches over the Bank Holiday weekend, but a single goal from Chris Flood was enough to secure all three points at the Melbourne Stadium.

The visitors were fortunate not to fall behind when Sam Togwell cleared the ball off the line on 20 minutes.

Ben Harris had the best chance for Slough in the first-half but put his shot over the crossbar in the 30th minute.

Matthew Stevens joined the Rebels on loan from Peterborough United in midweek and the striker had the ball in the back of the net on 64 minutes, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

The visitors broke the deadlock when a Chelmsford defender passed the ball to Flood inside the box and the substitute fired into the bottom corner in the 69th minute.

Slough joint-manager Jon Underwood told the Observer: “It was a great result for us having had a disappointing Bank Holiday weekend with two defeats.

“We knew Chelmsford would be a tough test because they’ve been in and around the play-offs for the past two years and are probably one of the favourites to go up this season.

“Chelmsford were the better side in the first-half and caused us a lot of problems.

“There were a few scares, including the Jack Turner save, which was unbelievable.

“I was pleased to get into half-time at 0-0 but as sometimes happens in football no two halves are the same.

“We were much better in the second-half. We took the game to them and caused them a lot of problems.

“It wasn’t a surprise when we scored because we were knocking on the door and causing them problems.

“We defended really well after we scored and limited them to a few set pieces, which Chelmsford are dangerous at.

“We managed the last 20 minutes very well so it ended up being a great result.”

He added: “Chelmsford will probably argue that they didn’t deserve to lose but it could have gone either way, and most games we’ve played this season have gone like that.

“We’ve not deserved to lose the two matches with have this season and could have won them both.

“These things even themselves out over the course of a season and you end up where you deserve to be.”

Commenting on the wonder save from Turner, Underwood said: “It was probably the best save I’ve ever seen live, and the best from any keeper that has played for us.”

“Jack is a top keeper and his reactions are fantastic. He makes some brilliant saves in training every week.

“It was a reaction save that took our breath away but Jack is capable of that. His reactions are up there with the best keepers in the league.”

The win means Slough have moved up two places to 14th position in the league table ahead of a visit to Arbour Park from Oxford City this Saturday (3pm).
