READING FC kick off their Carabao Cup campaign against Birmingham City at the Madejski Stadium tonight (8pm ko).

The furthest Royals have gone in the league cup was the quarter finals in the 1995/96 and 1997/98 season when they lost to Leeds and Middlesbrough respectively.

However, Reading’s involvement has resulted more lows than highs.

During the 2012/13 season the Royals played out a thrilling game against Arsenal, an infamous 7-5 defeat that is still talked about to this day.

With 40 mintues played Reading were 4-0 up thanks to goals from Jason Roberts, a Laurent Koscielny own goal, Mikele Leigertwood and Noel Hunt.

But just before half-time Theo Walcott pulled one back for Arsenal.

Olivier Giroud headed home from a corner to make it 4-2.

Two goals in the last 10 minutes from Koscielny and Walcott forced the match into extra-time.

Marouane Chamakh put Arsenal in front after he fired low past Adam Federici.

Pavel Pogrebnyak headed beyond Martinez to level the scores again, but the drama was still not over.

Walcott crashed home from eight yards to put Arsenal back in front and as Reading crumbled, Chamakh sealed victory with a lob that floated up and over Adam Federici.

There have been other notable low point such as the 6-0 defeat against Peterborough in Nigel Adkins’ second game in charge.

Former Reading manager Brian McDermott was also on the end of an upset after they lost to lowly League 2 side Northampton.
