MERV Lloyd now knows that if things are not broken then do not attempt to fix them in pre-season at Chalvey Sports.

The Stabmonks are busy preparing for their first-ever campaign in Hellenic Division One East after retaining their Division Two crown last term.

The dual second division title winners suffered a 5-1 defeat in a friendly match at Sheerwater on Saturday when Lloyd changed his players and tactics.

However, Chalvey reverted back to what they know best to win 2-0 at Sandhurst Town thanks to goals from Mike Gaut and Levi Thackery on Tuesday.

Stabmonks boss Lloyd told the Observer: “I’m always a little bit mystified by pre-season and we’ve created our own problems at times.

“You do well but then make problems for yourself by worrying about getting players in and whether or not people are gelling.

“It was 1-1 at half-time on Saturday but we went on to lose and that was down to playing people out of the normal positions.

“We wanted to get a foothold in pre-season and that came at Sandhurst in midweek when we went back to usual.

“If it’s not broken then don’t to and fix it, and that applies to me at the moment.”

“We’ve got to keep on going in the direction we were heading in at Sandhurst where it was a good performance and the group looked like it had gelled.”

Lloyd continued: “We’ve made a few additions to add a little bit of talent and a few have left.

“Everyone has gelled and gets on with one another with a smile on their face, so there’s no unrest.

“I’ve still not got everyone on the pitch that I want to because of other commitments, but we will get there and are moving in the right direction.

“We have still got to work on a few things and I’ve had interest from higher level players but I’m happy to start the season with what we’ve got.”
