SONNING Golf Club lost the away leg at Moor Park as their inter-club series ended 1-1 overall.

Sonning took advantage of the home leg earlier in the summer by winning 4.5-1.5.

But the team of eight men and four women were soundly beaten in the recent away leg in rural Hertfordshire, losing 6-0.

Sonning captain Bill Branagh and partner Chris Gurney lost the opening game to a par on the 18th hole before Peter Hodges and Trevor Smith were beaten on the 16th green.

Peter Davidson and Graham Burgess faired little better as they lost on the 15th hole, while Clive Jones and Sean Green found themselves two down after eight holes and never recovered, losing on the 16th.

Sonning ladies captain Barbara Shanks, partnered by Ros Gurney, suffered defeat in their match, as did Michelle James and Sarah Davidson in the final game.

Branagh said: "Thinking positively, it was 1-1 over the two games.

"It wasn't ideal for our last club match of the year, but the cameraderie developed over the two matches was excellent and means that we’d like to do it again."
