WOODLEY United turned on the style to annihilate Wokingham & Emmbrook 7-2 in their Southern Region Women’s League Division One North clash.

The tone was set as early as the third minute when May Hamblin ran from left to right behind the visiting back four to anticipate Rosie Page-Smith winning a header and from the edge of the penalty area, her cross-come-shot cleared goalkeeper Megan Bonifacci to put Woodley in front.

The hosts extended their lead on the quarter hour when a good run and cross from the right by Mollie Haines was cleared to the edge of Wokingham’s penalty area where Maddie Sawyer fired into the top corner for her first goal for the club.

Caroline Paterson reduced the arrears after 19 minutes when her free-kick went in at the far post, but Page-Smith responded two minutes later, also with a free kick.

Haines was denied by Bonifacci before Page-Smith beat the visiting keeper in a race for the ball to pass to Sawyer who scored her second after 29 minutes play.

Hamblin then showed good pace and strength to beat two defenders before slotting pass Bonifacci for United’s fifth three minutes before half time.

United started the second half strongly, but it was the visitors’ who cut the gap on 61 minutes when Alice Lilley converted a penalty.

It was a brief respite as shortly after Katie Lowther, unmarked in the penalty area, converted a Hamblin cross to make it 6-2.

Sophie Rabbet saw her shot rebound off the Woodley crossbar and Hamblin was denied a hat trick by Bonifacci before her third goal came when got on the end of a Surtees chipped free-kick with 14 minutes play remaining.

The final action saw a Rachel Masters’ cross put into the side netting by another Woodley debutant Charley Evans in the last minute.

Barton Rovers

BARTON Rovers stayed top of the Southern Region Women’s League following a 0-0 draw with third-placed Wycombe Wanderers.

There were only a handful of chances for Barton, the best falling to Phoebe Cole, but neither team could make a breakthrough.
