MANNY Williams has challenged Slough Town to create history this season after an impressive start in both the league and the FA Cup.

Slough are currently third in the Southern Premier Division, three points behind the league leaders King’s Lynn Town but with two matches in hand.

The Rebels reached the second round of the FA Cup following a 6-0 win away at Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday, where Williams believes everyone gave a nine-out-of-ten performance.

The veteran forward explained Slough always believed they could win in the first round tie, and he has called for his teammates to continue to push on.

Williams, 35, told the Observer: “We have been fortunate so far but we’ve played some good teams and not had an easy run in the FA Cup.

“I thought Dulwich Hamlet were very good and Poole Town were above us in terms of their league position.

“We’re flying in the cup, the league and the FA Trophy, so we’ve just got to keep going and try to set records and history if we can.

“This bunch of lads are amazing and, with me being where I am in my career, to reach the second round is up there as a great achievement. Whenever you are semi-pro and regardless of where you’ve been, to reach this stage of the competition has got to be up there.

“I would like to give us the best opportunity to get to the third round if we can and then draw Liverpool away, which would be an absolute dream for me.

“It’s fantastic and hopefully we can go on to create history and become the Slough side that goes into the third round.

“As a bunch of players we are just going to continue doing what we’re doing.

“Our main target is to win the league and get promoted, that hasn’t changed so far, but we’ve just got to enjoy the cup runs and see how far we get in them.”

Looking back on the first round win at Gainsborough on Saturday, Williams said: “It was hard fought. We needed to come and work hard. We didn’t carry anyone and we knew how important this was as a team and as individuals. We knew we were going to come and work hard for each other and try to get the win.

“Confidence is absolutely flying at the moment. You've just got to look at the way our season is panning out and even with the boys that are not playing.

"We know there's a lot of rotation but the gaffers are doing a really great job in trying to keep everyone happy.

"We never once believed that we were never going to get the win on Saturday."

Commenting on the win at Gainsborough, Williams said: "There was one goal in it in the first half, but if you look at the game Jack Turner didn't have a save to make until the 85th minute or so, so we completely bossed the match, dominated it.

"I could have had a couple in the first half and James Dobson went on a few runs but there was only one goal in it at half-time.

"We knew in the second half they would try and come at us and we were prepared for that to be fair. The second goal from Matt Lench early in the second half made things a bit easier for us really. That was vital.

"We knew in the first 15-20 minutes of the second half they were going to throw everything at us.

They made a sub at half-time and that was to try and load their attacking line, and that gave us that breathing space that we needed to settle down and start playing football.

"It showed going to get five more goals in the second half."
