SLOUGH Town joint-manager Neil Baker has hailed the comeback win at Merthyr Town as an amazing achievement on an incredible night at Penydarren Park on Tuesday.

The Rebels recovered from falling four goals behind to win 5-4 in Wales and retain second position in the Southern Premier Division table.

Slough made the worse possible start when Merthyr opened up a four-goal lead before the midway point in the first half. Ian Traylor struck twice with a Mo Touray effort and a Mark Nisbet own goal.

Baker wanted his side to show some character and not lose the second period but even he admits he did not think they would win the game.

Goals from Nathan Smart, Chris Flood and Warren Harris gave them hope, before a James Dobson brace completed the most unlikely of comebacks.

Speaking to the Observer, Baker beamed: “It was an incredible night and an amazing game to be involved in to be honest. I got through Wednesday at work on adrenaline alone.

“I’ve never been involved in a game like that before and never will be again. I played in a play-off semi-final that finished 4-4 but there was always one goal in it, never was one side so far ahead.

“We didn’t play that bad in the first half but made some very poor decisions at centre back. Guy Hollis and Mark Nisbet are both top players but they had 20 minutes to forget and were at fault for a couple of goals.

“Every time Merthyr went forward they scored and we could have gone into half-time five goals behind because they hit the post as well.”

He continued: “We went in at half-time but didn’t shout and scream. We had a pop at the two centre backs because they’re better than what we got from them, and to be fair they took that on the chin.

“We talked about what we did wrong because the game was probably gone. We wanted the players to go out and show some character and not lose the second half “We never thought we could come back and win the game, but a few players still believed which is great.”

Commenting on the incredible comeback, Baker said: “When we got the first goal Merthyr started to wobble a little bit.

“When we got the fourth we thought shall we sit back and take the point, but we had them on the ropes and got the fifth for the win.

“At 4-2 we thought we could get something out of the match because we were on top at that point and creating chances.

“But, to score five and not concede at Merthyr, who are a very good side, is a massive achievement and fantastic for the lads. There were amazing scenes after and I’m delighted for the boys, they will take all the credit.

“Part of the blame lies with the two centre backs but they’re still a part of the team that defended so well in the second half.

“It’s unheard of, especially at this level, and now we can look forward to Saturday which is a massive game for us.”

Slough now turn their attention to the FA Cup and a home fourth qualifying round tie against Bostik Premier Division club Folkestone Invicta this Saturday (3pm).

The Rebels then return to league action for the visit of Tiverton next Tuesday (7.45pm).
