TARIQE Fosu has left Reading FC to sign for Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

The attacking midfielder has signed a two-year deal with League One Addicks after turning down a new contract with Royals.

Fosu, 21, enjoyed a successful loan at Colchester United last season and netted three goals in last two games.

It is thought the lure of regular first-team football under Charlton boss Karl Robinson persuaded Fosu to move to The Valley.

He told the Charlton Athletic website: “As soon as it came about, I thought it was a massive opportunity for me.

“It’s a big club and I’m ready to get started. I’ve got a few mates that have played for Charlton and are at Charlton as well, so I spoke with them.

“When I heard Karl was in for me that was massive, it made the decision for me. He’s worked with a lot of young players so hopefully I can produce for him.”

He added: “I like to excite them (fans), I’m tricky with a bit of pace. Hopefully I can get some goals and assists as well.

“I’m ready to get started and hopefully I can score a few goals, set some up for the team and push for promotion.”

Reading Chronicle:

Tariqe Fosu in action for Colchester.

Fosu, who graduated from Royals' Academy, made his first-team debut from the bench in a 3-0 win Derby County in May 2015.

But it remains his one and only first-team appearance for the club and loan spells with Fleetwood Town and Accrington Stanley soon followed.

Fosu was then loaned to Colchester last August initially until January and he impressed the Us so much they extended it until the end of the season.

The exciting Wandsworth-born attacker ended up making 33 appearances for Colchester, scoring five goals.

And Addicks boss Robinson cannot wait to start working with Fosu, saying: “He’s someone I was excited to buy as soon as I knew we could get him in.

“He’s one that excites fans, his feet are phenomenal and hopefully we’ll be seeing flashes of that next season.

“He’s great behind the striker and can play off one of the wings if needed. Tariqe is definitely one for the future.

“We’re building a squad of hungry players that want to play for the club. He wants to be here and that’s important for us.”

Fosu becomes the second player to depart Reading FC in the past week with Latvia striker Deniss Rakels set to join Polish club Lech Poznan on loan for the season with a view to a permanent deal.

Meanwhile, Derby County full-back Cyrus Christie is one of several players attracting the interest of Royals boss Jaap Stam.

The Reading first-team return to pre-season training next Monday, with players recently involved in international matches set to join at a later date.
