WELLINGTON College ski star Charlie O’Connor insists he can take plenty of positives from his time at the Delancey British Children’s Championships, despite leaving Tignes empty-handed.

The event welcomed almost 300 of Britain’s most talented young skiers to the slopes of the French Alps.

Having finished 10th in the Under 14 Slalom, a run of 59.82 seconds in the Super G the following day saw him finishing fourth, just 0.13 seconds short of a spot on the podium, before ending his campaign with a DNF in the Giant Slalom.

But despite inevitable disappointment at missing out on a medal, O’Connor is confident he can make amends this time next year.

“It was a really good time. I have done loads of Super Gs before but at last year’s Championships, I didn’t finish because I was the last to go,” he said.

“I really wanted to put in a good performance because I know that I can do well in Super G. Thankfully, I did, and I’m really proud of that performance.

“The course was a bit bumpy at the top, so I had to have a couple of speed checks to ensure I was following the right line.”

He continued: “I felt that I was fast. I’m a bit annoyed to have missed out on the medals but, as I was one of the last bibs to go, I can’t expect too much.

“There’s always next year, and I’m really happy with my time so that’s the main thing.

“Last year I did well in the Giant Slalom and managed to win, so I thought I could win again.

“I knew that if I could put down two good runs again, then I had a good chance of being on the podium. There was some really good competition though.”

O’Connor’s time in Tignes drew the curtains on a season in which he has experienced a mixed bag of results, with ups and downs aplenty from the very start of the winter.

But he is quick to point out the abundance of improvements he has made, as he looks to continue his progression on the slopes into next season.

“It’s been a great Championships. I was a little annoyed when the Super G was postponed, but I think the organisation has been great,” he said.

“It’s been lots of fun too, and I think the atmosphere has made it a really enjoyable competition.

“This season has been a mixed one for me. I’ve been competing in lots of different races and there have been some highs and some lows.

“I think I have improved a lot this year and I’m doing a lot better in races and in training.”
