PLAYERS and officials from the Reading Midweek Cricket League turned out in high numbers to celebrate another season of outstanding team and individual success at the annual awards presentation evening.

West Reading were crowned Division One champions for the first time, while the Division Two crown was claimed by Purley who were clear winners from Racal in second position.

Verizon Vipers just pipped league sponsors Microsoft to claim the Division Three honours by six points, effectively by one victory.

The Keith Mitchell knock out cup was retained by Kidmore End who were comfortable winners against Friends XI in the final.

The presentation evening was again combined with a sport and general knowledge quiz.

Racal were crowned the 2016 “Quiz Cup Champions”, narrowly beating Warfield and Jealotts Hill into second and third place respectively.

The league recognised and made individual awards to three batsmen who scored 100 runs and to four bowlers taking five wickets or more, within the limit of four overs.

The stand out performance for the 2016 season was from Mortimer’s all-rounder Rob Dimmack.

He received the Division Two Player of the Season Trophy and doubled up by winning a centurion trophy for his 109 against Amec Foster Wheeler.

The 2016 top bowler was West Reading’s Hafeez Ul-Wahab, who took 6-14 against Sulhamstead in an early season cup tie.

The evening was a tremendous success for Mortimer’s all-rounder Ian Bliss who was delighted to win the top raffle prize, a Gray Nicolls A61 400 cricket bat.

League treasurer Jeff Wayling was delighted with the high attendance at the function.

He concluded by offering an open invitation to players of all ages and abilities in the Reading area to join the RMCL for the 2017 season.
