WITH three weeks of the league season gone, it’s been a mixed start for our Reading-based sides.

London Irish have certainly done well and, I guess, a lot of you ardent fans would immediately respond to that by shouting at me `Well so they should do’.

I take your point, but Premiership or Championship you’ve still got to win your games and, so far, Irish have not disappointed.

They made it three wins out of three last weekend at a strong Bedford Blues side to stay one point clear of Yorkshire Carnegie at the top of the Greene King IPA Championship table.

A case of so far, so good, and let’s hope they continue their march back to the Premiership this Sunday at home to Ealing Trailfinders.

It was a frustrating Saturday for Redingensians Rams, losing at home to their near neighbours Henley Hawks.

At least Rams got a bonus point but I’m really sure they won’t be happy with that result. They have a tough old trip to Redruth this Saturday.

On a personal note, I was obviously happy with ‘my boys’ Reading’s performance last Saturday in beating visitors Oxford Harlequins to open our South West One East account.

It was primarily thanks to our strong second-half performance after having been behind at the interval, and lets hope we can kick on.

After two successive opening season losses this was a confidence-building performance especially because of the commitment we showed and it was just what we needed to build on, push forward and make Holme Park a fortress.

Individually I thought newcomer Harri Palmer-Edwards had a great game in the centre and on the wing Chris Greig created lots of space that resulted in him ultimately touching down the final try.

We have Witney at home this Saturday so let’s hope we maintain the winning momentum.

Newly-promoted Reading Abbey have yet to chalk up a win, but if they can cut out the yellow cards and build on last Saturday’s performance against visitors and early unbeaten league leaders Old Patesians then, hopefully, they will start picking up some wins.

They go to Oxford Harlequins this Saturday while Berkshire Shire Hall take a rest from league commitments bucked by last Saturday’s BB&O Championship win over county rivals Aldermaston.

So why not go out and support one of the local sides this Saturday – I can assure you there will be plenty of entertainment no matter which club you visit.
