‘THE Guests’ retained their title at the Calcot Park Junior Fundraising Day recently.

Mark Guest’s team overcame 29 rivals in the 18-hole stableford competition (best two scores per hole), amassing an impressive 88 points.

Runners up were ‘Harry’s Heroes’ (Calcot Park), who were captained by Simon Powell.

They finished on 84 points to take second on countback from ‘Northy’s Old Boilers’ from Wokefield Park. They were captained by Colin North.

Nearest the Pin competitions on all four par 3’s were also contested and were won by Guest, Powell, David Woolford and Neale Connor.

The annual tournament was open to teams of both adults and juniors and was held in support of the Calcot Park Junior Section to help with transporting the juniors to matches against other clubs and paying for team shirts.

It was sponsored by Calcot member, Paul Macbeth, of Macbeth’s Insurance.

  • ALEX Reed and Jack Houlder racked up 68 points to win Reading Golf Club’s Men’s Invitational on countback.

They recorded a superb 45 points on the back nine to go with the 23 they accrued on their outward nine to take the honours from Lee Pearce and Simon Hargrave (28 and 40).

Tim Shaughnessy and Mark Jones took the bronze medal position with 64 points (21 and 43) to edge Dan Holmes and Tom Jennings (63 = 23 and 40) into fourth.

The best round in the morning was played by Colin and Brian Reed, who totalled 29 points.

Outside of the other winners, the best afternoon round was compiled by Martin Walmsley and Matt Davis, who collected 41 points.

Nearest the pin competitions were held on both the 8th and 15th holes.

Reading member Terry Hearmon was nearest on the 8th, his afternoon effort finishing 2.1m from the hole.

Lee Beckford won the guest category by putting his approach 6.6m from the cup.

The 15th was the hole to go for in the morning, with Paul Milam taking the member’s crown with a shot to 65cm, while guest David Stevenson remarkably went even closer, coming just 27cm from a hole in one.

  • SEAMUS Smith is the new club champion at Caversham Heath.

Smith (3hcp) clinched the title after a play-off against Matt Robertson (4hcp).

The champion recorded rounds of 78 and 77 (155), while Robertson shot the same scores in reverse.  Third was James Millard (5hcp) with 78 and 80 (158), however, he recorded three bogeys in his last four holes.

Day one joint leader Dave Williams (4hcp) dropped eight shots on his last six holes and slumped to an 82 to finish joint fourth with Dave Brown (4hcp), who shot 77 following an 83 on day one (160).

The 2014 winner, Richard Craven (1hcp), finished sixth after rounds of 81 and 80 for a total of 161.

Nett champion was Philip Worswick (16hcp) after rounds of nett 68 and 66 for a total of 134.  Runner-up was Jack Turrill (12hcp), whose rounds of 71 and 75 meant he finished 12 shots back.

Two shots back and joint third were Christopher Searle (20hcp), Colin Stoute (14hp) and Millard.

Anne Smith (7hcp) clinched her sixth consecutive Ladies Club Championship with rounds of 88 and 85 (173). Runner-up was Lynne Rumbold (18hcp), who shot 104 and 100 (204) and third was Caroline Dover (27hcp) with 112 and 104 (216).

Smith was also nett winner with rounds of 81 and 78 giving her a total of 158. Second was Dover with (162) and third was Rumbold (168).

Williams (4hcp) triumphed in Division One of the Midweek Stableford with 38 points. Runner-up was Rob Winstanley (9hcp), on countback from James Walker (11hcp), both with 37 points.

Division Two winner was Searle (20hcp) with 35 points. Second was John North (22hcp) with 34 points and third was Andy Ward (26hcp), on countback from Ralph Lambert (21hcp), both with 33 points.

Kevin Iremonger won the 9-hole stableford competition with 38 points. Second was Keith Taylor, on countback from James Saunders, both with 37 points.
