LIAM Ferdinand struck twice as Binfield battered Burnham 4-0 at Hill Farm Lane on Monday night, writes Dave Wright.

The in-form striker had also bagged a brace in the 4-1 win at Lydney on Saturday and now has five goals in the opening three Hellenic League games.

With nine points, the unbeaten Moles have made a tremendous start to the new campaign and there is more to come says manager Roger Herridge.

“We are still short of players with some on holiday, but next week we will start getting bodies back and they will strengthen the squad and give me more options.

“Despite our three wins, we still have a lot of things to work on and we can do that when everyone is available.

“Then it will be up to the players to perform and if they have the shirt, it is up to them to keep it. There will certainly be competition for places.”

Herridge warned his players about complacency before taking on a Burnham side who have yet to win a game since dropping down to the Hellenic League.

And as the Moles manager later pointed out: “They put themselves around and worked hard, so fair play to them, but that said, we always looked like winning the game and could easily have scored more.”

It took them just 10 minutes for Jean-Claude Etienne to open the scoring and Ferdinand made it 2-0 on 34 minutes.

He could have had another early in the second half in a one-on-one situation with the Blues’ keeper but shot straight at Joe Broadley.

On 70 minutes Moles did add a third when midfielder Ross Seldon, their new signing from Ascot United, fired in a long-range shot that took a deflection in a crowded goalmouth.

Burnham, with former England striker Luther Blissett coaching them from the bench, never gave up, but rarely troubled Garry Aulsberry in the home goal.

With Burnham’s Callum Stratford having been carried off with an ankle injury, there were almost nine minutes of stoppage time and it was late in that period when Ferdinand completed the scoring.

Binfield are away to Royal Wootton Bassett on Saturday (3pm) and then Ascot United next Tuesday (7.45 pm).
