TWO championship records were smashed at the Berkshire Schools Athletic Association’s under-13 inter-area championships held recently at Palmer Park Stadium, Reading.

Harry Brooker won the boys’ discus with a throw of 30.96 metres to beat the previous best of 30.64.

And Maisie Jeger raced to victory in the girls’ 600m in 1min 42.5sec, shaving a second off the old record.

Both youngsters were competing for West Berkshire.

That region were the most successful in the boys’ competition, accumulating 59 points in 11 events.

They finished well clear of runners-up Slough on 44 points, with Reading third on 41. Then came Bracknell with 34 points, Windsor and Maidenhead on 31 and Wokingham with 18.

Bracknell took the honours in the girls’ event with a total of 56 points, eight ahead of their nearest rivals West Berks. Third place went to Windsor and Maidenhead with 43, while Wokingham (36) just edged out Reading (35) for fourth spot. It was not Slough’s day as they managed just six points.

  • READING Athletic Club veterans Reading finished their league season on a high in Monday’s match at Horspath, with a new club record, eight individual wins, and wins for both the men and ladies in the 4x200m relay.

The performances saw Reading’s men finish third on the night, and the ladies fourth.

Julie Wilson (W50) won both the shot (9.67m) and discus (29.62m) while Nigel Spratley-Kemp (M35) and Jan Drzewiecki (M50) took the discus with throws of 33.48m and 40.11m respectively. Also on the field, Lucy Daniells won the W35 pole vault with a height of 1.70m.

Karen Burles won the W35 200m A race (28.3secs), Hari Sewell took the M50 200m (26.0secs) and Julie Rayfield bagged the W35 5,000m (21:26:10).

Simon Reed broke the M35 800m club record in 2:16:20.
