BURNHAM Cricket Club’s Mohammed Fazal has received an eight-match ban from the Home Counties Premier League following an ugly bust-up with Henley.

Fazal has been suspended following an investigation into an incident during a Division One match at Taplow Common Road on May 14.

The Observer understands Fazal kicked down the stumps and was dragged off the field by teammates before an altercation with a senior Henley player.

Witnesses also claimed Fazal stormed into the Henley dressing room before bystanders stepped in to diffuse the situation.

A anonymous spectator at the match said: “I have been involved in cricket for a long time and never seen anything like it before. The whole episode was a total disgrace.

“If players can’t control their own actions there is no place for them in a cricket environment.”

Fazal has been slapped with an eight-match ban, two suspended, from the Home Counties League, which declined to make further comment. Fazal can appeal against the ban.

Henley are now considering an official complaint. Club secretary, Tony Fettiplace, said: “On behalf of the club, I can tell you the league has commenced disciplinary proceedings.

“There is a proper process for that and all parties will be asked to contribute as appropriate, and we will be happy to do so.

“We are waiting to hear from the Home Counties League.”

Burnham received a warning about their disciplinary record last year and declined to comment until after they meet with the league next week.

Umpire Alison Smith has replaced John Reed for the match between Reading and Burnham this Saturday after Reed took charge of the Henley game.
