READING’S only rugby league club is calling on the public to choose its name.

Previously known as Reading Royals Rugby League Club, it was decided to remove ‘Royals’ from the name to avoid clashing with the town’s professional football club.

A shortlist of six potential names has been drawn up by the club’s committee. The choices are: Reading Raiders – the name of Reading’s previous rugby league club whose heyday was in the 1990s. The potential of resurrecting the name was endorsed by players of the previous club.

Reading Kings – going along the same lines as ‘Royals’, Kings offers a like-for-like swap for a team with a royal flavour.

Reading Roar – with the potential to tap into the imagery of the Forbury Lion, this offers a different brand direction for the club.

Reading Wreckers – there are lots of ‘hits’ in rugby league and this alliterative option fits in with wrecking ball imagery in a nod to the physicality of the sport.

Reading Rapids – another alliterative option which conjures up images of the sport’s pace.

Reading Troopers – fitting in with the collective mentality essential to rugby league teams, the name can also be linked to local war hero, Trooper Potts.
