ASCOT United fell to their second successive Hellenic League Premier Division defeat on Saturday as they were beaten 1-0 at the Racecourse Ground by Highworth Town.

TJ Bohane’s 40th-minute strike was enough to condemn Jeff Lamb’s side to defeat, meaning it’s now three straight losses for the Yellamen.

Ascot started the season brightly with back-to-back victories, but having lost their last two league games, they are in danger of falling off the pace at the top of the table.

It was a swelteringly hot day at the Racecourse and it took its toll on Lamb’s men, with a below par performance that saw them barely create a chance of note throughout.

At the other end, Bohane and Bradley Clarke were a constant threat in attack, giving the home defence no time to rest as they ran the channels well throughout the game.

Lamb and his assistant – Paul McGrotty – were again on the Ascot bench due to a lack of strength in depth over the summer months, and so it showed as Highworth dominated the early stages.

Clarke went close twice in as many minutes early on before the deadlock was eventually broken in the 40th minute.

Callum Parsons embarked on a fine solo run through the heart of the Ascot defence before slipping the ball to Bohane, who took one touch, opened his body and curled the ball past Chris Grace.

It was a deserved lead and although David Pitt was well placed just moments before the break, he couldn’t equalise as his shot sailed wide.

Marvin Hines replaced the ineffective Daryl McLean early in the second half and he had Ascot’s best chance of the game as he latched onto a Lee Boon pass but fired over from close range.

Joe Jarra then spurned a similar opportunity five minutes later as Ascot failed to test Kurtis Sharkey in the visiting goal until added time.

Jamie West’s drilled effort forced Sharkey to tip the ball over the bar, before he had to make a smart save to push a header from the resulting corner away. The Yellamen were due to face Flackwell Heath last night before hosting Royal Wootton Bassett on Saturday.
