WOKINGHAM were knocked off the top of the Thames Valley League Division One table after suffering a five-wicket defeat at home to Yateley.

The Oaks chose to bat and made a solid start until Jake Turner was caught by wicket keeper Ryan Bone off the bowling of Harry Bartlett for 19.

Eamonn Vines and Simon Myles consolidated and took the score to 122 before the latter fell to Stuart Lipo for a well-crafted 49.

Captain Stuart Hayter (26) was the only one of the middle order to make any real contribution, and it was left to Vines (114no) – scoring his third century of a productive campaign – and fellow Australian Matt Wicks (34) to take the hosts to 254-8.

Yateley made a superb start as James Muir (43) and James Halson (67) shared a 122-run stand, only for the visitors to lose four wickets for 25 as they slipped to 147-4.

However, Bone (75) and Jacques Pienaar (40no) rescued the situation for Yateley, though, and despite the best efforts of Anthony Clapham (2-49) and Paul Dewick (2-64), the visitors secured the win with five balls to spare.

Wokingham visit reigning champions Kew this coming Saturday (1pm).

In Division 3a, Wokingham 2nds secured an important 55-run win at Fleet as they leapfrogged their opponents to move off the foot of the table.

The Oaks batted first and were in trouble at 45-4 before Dan Reddyhough (72) and Luca Wade(46) added 88, and Reddyhough and Jacob Clark (35) then added 63 as their side were all out for 205 in 47.5 overs.

In reply Fleet were 99-3 but fell away due to Martin Wilson’s bowling (5-62) as the hosts were rooted out for 150 in 40.3 overs.

Some brilliant batting from Wokingham 3rds’ lower middle order helped them secure a draw at home to Boyne Hill 2nds in Division 5b.

Sanjay Jain (4-40) was the pick of the Oaks’ attack as they restricted the visitors to 235-9 in their 52 overs.

Marcus Viljoen (31) gave Wokingham a strong start before they collapsed to a worrying 85-5, only for superb knocks from youngster Harry Staples (78) and Ashley Cutts (69) to rescue the situation as the hosts closed on 215-6.

Callum Creighton bowled Wokingham 4ths to a stunning victory at Maidenhead & Bray 3rds in Division 7a.

The visitors won the toss and were dismissed for 184, but Creighton (6-29) helped bowl Maids out for 175.

In Division 9a, Wokingham 5ths suffered a tough day at the office as Newbury 3rds racked up 254-5 before bowling the Oaks out for just 58 in a crushing 196-run win.

Wokingham Under 19s enjoyed an emphatic six-wicket win against Shinfield.

Jamie Cable (3-6) and Vikesh Patek (3-14) destroyed the Shinfield line-up as they were routed for just 63 in 13 overs, before Ben Myles (22) led his side to a comprehensive victory.

Staples made a wonderful 71 not out as Wokingham Under 17s enjoyed a convincing 45-run win against West Ilsley.

He was well supported by Michael Cowdell (55) as the Oaks racked up a colossal 194-5 in their 20 overs.

However, West Ilsley played their shots and with Wokingham’s fielding below-par, they were up with the rate for the first 10 overs.

Ilsley could not maintain the run rate against the canny bowling of Jacob Clark and Staples, though, and closed on a brave 149-4.
