NEWCOMERS to the Barnes Fitness Dinton Pastures Summer Series podium took top spots over both the 5k and 10k distances.

In the 5k race, Winnersh-based runner Oliver Hill — who finished fourth in last month’s 10k — pushed Reading Roadrunners’ Simon Elsbury into second with a winning time of 18:06.

Datchet Dashers’ James Samson was first home in the 10k in 35:04, and Edinburgh University student Bethany Hanson led the women in 40:52.

Elsbury — who finished third over the 10k distance in May — recorded 18:11 in the 5k and was followed home by June winner Wayne Clements of Datchet Dashers, 22 seconds later.

Leading the women was Reading Roadrunners’ Sarah Urwin-Mann, who broke her own course record when she crossed the line in 19:25 — seven seconds faster than the time she set in August 2014.

Just five seconds behind her in 19:30 was Rebecca Campbell, of Headington Road Runners, who had won over the 5k distance in both May and June.

Taking third place on the podium was Bracknell Forest Runners’ Helen Johnson, who shaved two seconds off the F50 course record to finish in 21:30.

Helen Hart of Hart Road Runners took top Vet40 spot for the second month running with a time of 24:26.

Reading Roadrunners’ Maureen Sweeney built on her success in May with a Vet50 time of 28:36.

First Vet60 was Bracknell Forest Runners’ Linda Rayman in 34:36.

Graham Hetherington, from Reading, maintained his position as Vet60 for the third time this year and also took 21 seconds off the Vet60 course record he set in May 2014 when finishing in 48:00.

Not to be outdone, Trisha Arnold, of Reading Roadrunners, sliced more than three minutes off the women’s Vet60 course record she set in May to finish in 1:00:26.

The men’s Vet40 honours went to Nigel Grove, of Nettlebed, in 39:02, while Chris Mason, of Reading Roadrunners, was first Vet50 in 41:42. First Vet70 was ATC 75 member Adrian Wadham in 54:53.

Race director Ellie Barnes said: “We saw three course records broken on a beautiful summer’s evening and with just the August fixture to go before the series prizes are decided, the pressure is really on across both distances.” The prizes were sponsored by Salming Running shoes and apparel. The next Summer Series fixture is on Thursday, August 13 (7pm). For details go to www.barnesfitness.co.uk.

Among the 290 runners competing across both distances were 35 colleagues and friends of talented local triathlete Katie Henderson, who died in a road traffic accident in June. They were fundraising for British Triathlon Foundation Trust, which works to introduce children to the sport and helps promote a healthy lifestyle.
