Letter: Attack on Naz Sarkar is no surprise

LABOUR Party members in Reading West will not be surprised at Conservative Mark Adams" venomous attack on Naz Sarkar, our Parliamentary candidate (Chronicle, June 18).
The Tories have always done politics by personal attacks on their opponents - from the Tony Blair "demon eyes" poster in 1997, to their party chairman libelling Martin Salter, to a leaflet during the last local elections describing retiring Labour councillors as rats.
We expect these nasty smears because we know they will do anything to avoid having to put forward policies or say what they would do if they won power.
Labour will fight the next general election on our record of improving public services and helping people weather the global economic recession, and on our plans to renew democracy and make Britain a fairer and more equal society.
And, even if the Tories won"t talk about policies, we"ll make sure voters know that the alternative is David Cameron"s plan for 10% cuts, which will damage public services just when people need them most.
It would be better for our politics if the Tories engaged in a real debate about the issues that matter to people, rather than just throwing around personal abuse.

Maybe Ben is like Gordon Brown and unable to read the latest budget, but instead focus on spin.
Labour capital investment:
2009-10 £44bn
2010-11 £36bn
2011-12 £29bn
2012-13 £26bn
And Labour still have the cheek to say they are increasing capital spending until 2012, an outright lie, and at the same time talk about 10% cuts!
The scariest thing is the debt:
2009-10 - £792bn
2010-11 - £977bn
2011-12 - £1130bn
2012-13 - £1262bn
So one thing is true, Gordon Brown will have to spend more, but to service the debt while cutting investment.

Well I for one will not be voting labour at the general election now.All due respect Naz who ever he might be but Reading should be repesented by a Reading person and not a out sider who knows nothing about the history of Reading it's problems first hand and someone who is going to live in Reading for at least 60 years not use the town to get ahead with his carear prospects.

One has no comment on this particular selection procedure, no doubt local electors will assess the wisdom of it.
Parliament, and Governance at every level has become something of a disappointment, clearly in many cases inadequates are elected to serve electorates. Regrettably too often such persons become anything from Councillor to Member of Parliament despite their perceived inadequacies. However we might do well to remember that such persons are usually selected through incompetent Branch Managements, who in turn hold their positions through the lack of involvement of Party Members.

An interesting statement Ben------how would you consider that the council tax system is fair , when it doesn\'t consider the abily to pay it ie, the less the income of a particular household ,then the bigger percentage of that income has to be used to pay the council tax!!
Is that what the Labour party considers a \'fair tax\'?
Not that the Tories have any better ideas---their best effort is to freeze it for 2 years ---what use is that? The best solution is to abolish it , and replace it by collecting the same amount of money on national (not local--you Libdems) income tax.
The income tax system exists, and has already been payed for----by not having the admin , about £2,5 million would be saved in Reading!!
Multiply that throughout the land and you can see that the taxpayer would actually have to stump up less cash overall.
Taxation should be based on the ability to pay it!

Yes, I think that the price of carrots have increased beyond the inflation rate.
