Back to humanity

Being Human Season Two is around a month away from airing, and there's much to be giddy about. [this blog - and the stories it links to - contains some minor spoilers]

The BBC's site has been doing video updates throughout the filming process - with plenty of little nuggets there to whet the appetite, although as ever for my money the best bits - yes even better than Russell Tovey, Lenora Crichlow and Aidan Turner blatantly having a ball on set - remain series creator Toby Whithouse's hints about what the new series will bring.

Intriguingly, Toby Whithouse has told SFX that one of the things covered in the new season is what happens to the vampire community: “There was always the assumption that once Herrick had been taken out of the picture the green shoots of democracy would spring up. Kind of like in Iraq when Saddam Hussein was deposed. They thought it would suddenly all be very civilised and democratic. But actually what’s been left with Herrick gone is utter chaos, and so Mitchell finds himself having to sort out a lot of the problems he created.”

So by all accounts we can expect season 2 to be darker and with the threat against our trio proving (mostly) more human than supernatural. Paired with an American remake (we can but hope that those rumours about Mitchell being made a woman are just that) and a host of merchandise opportunities including books and a soundtrack album, 2010 looks set to be the year of Being Human - Tennant, Shmennant, this is the scifi that I'm looking forward to in the new year, along with the Ian McKellan-lead remake of The Prisoner airing on ITV1 in January.

And speaking of SFX if the latest issue of the UK's leading sci-fi mag is anything to go by then I'm not the only one thinking Being Human is on course for good things. I've been given a sneak peek of what (I think - feel free to correct me!) is the show's first ever magazine cover - and doesn't it look pretty?

SFX hits newsstands next week and includes a four page set report with interviews with Toby Whithouse, director Colin Teague and all the cast. And let's face it, it makes a change from the final issue of the year being a Christmassy Doctor Who cover doesn't it? Result!
