The songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David sum up the more laid back quality of the 1960s like nothing else.

Trying to pick a favourite song from their repertoire is impossible - and even people who have never heard of them will know their work.

Modern singers constantly do updated versions of Bacharach David classics like Alfie, Walk On By and 24 Hours from Tulsa.

So when Steve and Gemma Parkyn from the Colnbrook based drama group CAST (Colnbrook Amateur Stage Theatre) decided to stage a review based around the duo's songs they had some difficult choices to make deciding which ones to include.

In the end they went for broke. Their resulting Bacharach & David Songbook show features virtually every member of CAST who can sing and as many classic songs as can be crammed into a nifty 105 minutes.

The songs are linked by a witty, informative commentary delivered by Steve and Gemma, along with another husband and wife team Steve and Laura Oakes - telling the stories behind the songs.

Some of the stories give real insight into their era. Did you know for example that Cilla Black did not want to record Alfie - saying she would only do it if Bacharach personally came over to England, arranged it and played piano on the recording.

She thought the great man would never agree - he did.

The result was one of Cilla's biggest hits.

The Bacharach & David Songbook can be seen at Colnbrook Village Hall in Vicarage Way, Colnbrook from Wednesday, July 12 until Saturday, July 15 at 7.45pm.

Advance tickets are available at the special price of only £5 until July 9, £8 after that.
