CAMERAS will be installed at junctions across the borough after 'alarming' figures showed more than 6,000 vehicles were caught jumping red lights.
During a seven-day period 761 motorists ignored traffic lights at one junction and more than 6,000 at four junctions along Bath Road, Slough, risking a crash.
The shocking figures have resulted in Slough Borough Council launching a new awareness campaign.
Keith Beasley, road safety officer for Slough Borough Council, said: "The introduction of the cameras is one part of a much wider programme designed to reduce road traffic casualties within the borough.
"It's important to educate drivers about the risks and consequences of jumping red traffic lights in addition to the police enforcing the law."
He added 372 of the motorists caught jumping lights were exceeding the speed limit and some resulted in a collision
with a number of them being serious crashes.
Cameras are expected to be installed at various junctions in Slough before the end of the year. Posters have also been displayed in public buildings and various businesses with two photographers, one of a high-jumper and the other of a red traffic light, and the message "There are some things you can jump and there are some things you can't", pictured above.
Cllr Sohail Munawar, commissioner for community and leisure, said: "There is never an excuse to jump a red light, no matter how late you are or how frustrated you have become trying to get to your destination. Jumping red lights can kill."

If the Traffic lights weren't phased in such a stupid manner then many people wouldn't have to take the chance, if you abide by the lights then it'll take you 30 minutes to get to Slough, sort the phasing out muppets.

I agree with JUDGE1066.
Half the lights are ludicrous & totally unnecessary, Slough has become the "nanny state" capital of Britain.
Why would a traffic light on the main straight on the bath road at Cippenham be red a 3.30am when there is absolutely NOTHING around. Its just plain stupid.
