SLOUGH MP Fiona Mactaggart has been labelled as 'two-faced' for accepting hospitality from Azerbaijan to attend the Royal Windsor Horse Show, to treat her hard working staff.
Miss Mactaggart, who is known for her active human rights campaigning, accepted the invitation from the European Azerbaijan Society for the event in May.
She took three of her staff who enjoyed lunch and dinner in the Royal Enclosure and were presented with a commemorative scarf. The hospitality was reportedly worth £1,000. Councillor Wayne Strutton, deputy leader of the Slough Conservatives, said she should have turned the invitation down.
He said: "A nice day out got in the way of doing what she should have and saying no.
"She shouldn't have accepted hospitality from a country that exploits woman and children.
"It is two-faced of her because of everything she stands for. I personally would have said no."
The role of the society is to 'promote' Azerbaijan, which has been heavily criticised by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
Miss Mactaggart said: "I used the opportunity to raise issues related to human rights with representatives of Azerbaijan while I was there.
"The show was on the edge of my constituency in honour of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
"This invitation from the European Azerbaijan Society gave me an opportunity to attend and I took members of my team of hard working staff to enjoy the day with me as a thank you."
