STUDENTS from Burnham Grammar School had the opportunity to work with a former BMX world champion.

BMX expert Mike Mullen visited the school to help out with Burnham Grammar’s Flying Geese project, which aims to help certain students improve their behaviour and achievement at the school.

Mr Mullen was the 1994 World Amateur Champion for BMX, and is currently the 2017 UK Pro Half Pipe Champion.

The session with champ Mr Mullen, which was put on for Year 8 students, began with the students talking about their goals, teamwork exercises, and finally a run through on a special BMX course.

Mike Durose, Head of Physical Education, leads the Flying Geese project, which motivates students through a points-based system. Mr Durose said: “The students got a great deal out of the day and all seem motivated to keep behaviour points to a minimum and to try and gain as many achievement points as possible. Mike Mullen will be returning in November to check on the groups’ progress and make sure they are sticking to their goals!”

If the students have stuck to their goals, Mr Mullen will put on a BMX workshop for them at that time to teach them some bike tricks.
