TAN Dhesi has spoken out regarding concerns over his dual role as an MP and a councillor for Kent County Council.

Mr Dhesi was elected as a councillor for Kent County Council in May, representing the Northfleet and Gravesend West ward, shortly before he was elected as Slough’s MP.

He said he did not want to ‘betray the trust’ of his voters in Kent by leaving the post.

“There are several MPs who are MPs and councillors, and others who have various other jobs – like George Osborne, who is an MP and a newspaper editor.

“When I was elected in May, I had several other positions in the community. I had a full time job in construction, was chairman of the local Labour party, and was a trustee of an Alzheimers and Dementia support charity, in addition to being a councillor.

“Since my election in June, I have gradually stepped down from my various other responsibilities.”

Mr Dhesi confirmed he was no longer a trustee or chairman, and had resigned from his construction job, although he retained his councillor post.

“The people elected me in May – I’m not one to leave, or betray their trust. They knew I was a parliamentary candidate, but still bestowed their trust in me. I will serve to the best of my abilities.”

Mr Dhesi said he had “no intention” of re-standing for his councillor post, and will aim to serve out his term.

Fulfilling a campaign promise, Mr Dhesi has been making final arrangements to move into Slough, and has purchased a new home in the area.

“As promised during the campaign, I have purchased a home in Slough, which of course is within the constituency.”

Mr Dhesi declined to say exactly where his new home was located.
