Firefighters from Langley had a day to remember on Friday - involving a car crash, a flaming frying pan and a dramatic rescue high in the air.

But they did not mind too much. It was all for the benefit of members of the public who visited an Open Day at the fire station in London Road.

Younger visitors loved the chance to climb into a real fire engine.

They gasped with delight as firefighters swung perilously from their training tower, showing how they fight fires in tall buildings.

There was a demonstration of how they use specialist tools to cut injured people free from wrecked cars - and young visitors were shown how to practise resuscitation techniques on a dummy.

There was a practical warning about the dangers that can lie in wait in the kitchen, when the crew showed how throwing water on a blazing frying pan can make the situation much worse.

Flames exploded out of the side of the van where the crew were staging the demonstration and the point was made.

This week crew manager Alex Clarke said that the Open Day had been a great success.

He said: "It was a great community event designed to let people see how we operate."
