AN ENTIRE hectare of public green space is set to be disposed of and replaced with housing – despite anger from residents.

Slough Borough Council is planning to convert the western half of Norway Drive Recreation Ground, in Wexham, Slough, into a new housing development.

Additionally, the entirety of another green space at the back of the Village Health Centre in Mercian Way will also be redeveloped into housing. This area is 0.3 hectares in total.

Many residents of Norway Drive were dismayed by the proposal.

A pensioner who lives in Norway Drive, but who did not want to be named, said: “It’s just not fair.

“Kids use it a lot, families have picnics there.

“Its the only recreation ground the kids on Wexham Road have got, the only bit of green land we’ve got.

People feel like giving up, we protest and object, but nothing happens.”

While planning is proceeding with the Mercian Way site, several objections were received regarding the proposed buildings on Norway Drive Recreation Ground.

A council spokeswoman said: “Objections were received regarding Norway Drive, so it will return to Cabinet in September for further consent.

“The Cabinet will then vote on the matter.

“Mercian Way is progressing to the legal stage and will be promoted through planning by Slough Urban Renewal.”

However, another pensioner of Norway Drive, who also wanted to withhold her name said: “It should never be sold.

“It’s common land, and its been like that for 50 years.

“Why sell it?”

A mother, whose children regularly use the recreation ground, said: “None of us are happy with it.

“I have three kids, and I can just let them cross the street to play, and watch them from the upstairs window. We use it all the time, and we’d lose out a lot if it were built on. So no – its not good.”

The price of the sale, or how many homes would be built on the land, has not yet been determined by Slough Borough Council.
