THE Royal borough has had its Fairtrade status renewed.

This comes after a large number of businesses, schools and places of worship supported the Fairtrade organisation.

The borough’s Fairtrade steering group campaigned hard to ensure the Fairtrade status would be renewed, and are delighted with their success.

Dianne Redvers chairwoman of the borough’s steering group said: “Buying products with the Fairtrade logo on guarantees that farmers in developing countries will get a fair wage for the products they grow. There are now around 600 Fairtrade Towns in the UK, and we are delighted the Royal Borough is committed once more to help farmers move out of poverty by being part of this group.”

The organisation was founded in 2001, and has helped maintain the borough’s Fairtrade status since it was first received in 2006. The borough’s status is re-assessed every two-to-three years. A certificate was presented to Cllr Samantha Rayner.
