The whole country was shocked by the disastrous fire at Grenfell Tower.

But Pat Corcoran, 63, of Grampian Way, Langley, was particularly shaken to see an area he knew well from his childhood come up on his television screen, in such tragic circumstances.

He said: "The tower was only a quarter of a mile away from where I lived. It was the area I went to school and I met my wife there."

Mr Corcoran has lived in Langley 32 years and began approaching local businesses asking them to make donations.

Langley Dental Clinic and the McParland Pharmacy were among those who made contributions , as well as Budgens in Station Road.

Mr Corcoran and his son Richard, who lives in Paget Road, then delivered the donations to West London.

He was not surprised to hear the suspected cause of the fire.

" I worked for 26 years with fabrics, glue and wood. As soon as I saw on television the flames outside the building I told my wife 'it's the cladding'."
