A SOUTH Bucks woman has smashed her fundraising target after hosting a charity event.

Rebecca Gittins, 38, of Farnham Common, hosted a charity quiz night last Friday to raise money for The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation as she prepares to run the London Marathon on April 23.

Both her mother-in-law and her best friend’s mother sadly passed away from the disease.

Mrs Gittins had originally aimed to raise £2,000 overall for her charity of choice but the quiz night alone brought in more than £4,000 for her cause.

She said: “Roy Castle was a member of the local church that I attend and have attended since I was born. Roy’s widow, Fiona, and children still attend the church and are friends of our family.”

More than 130 people attended the quiz night at Farnham Common Village Hall, in Victoria Road, and Fiona Castle spoke about the charity and its work.

Mrs Gittins added: “It was brilliant to surprise all my quiz night guests with Fiona’s attendance which really helped to bring the cause to life and raise £4,200.

Mrs Gittins added: “The London Marathon will be my first, and likely last, marathon. While it’s something I have wanted to do for many years, I am nervous at the prospect and am hugely apprehensive about the gruelling training I will have to go through! But it’s great to know I am running for such an important cause that is so close to my heart.”
