At 8.34 this morning the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a girl.

Kate, who was born in the Royal Berkshire Hospital and grew up in Bucklebury had been days overdue when she was admitted to hospital at six o'clock this morning

The princess is the Queen’s fifth great-grandchild and fourth in line to the throne behind her brother Prince George, her father Prince William and her grandfather Charles.

Both mother and daughter are understood to be ‘doing well.’

A spokesperson from Kensington Palace said: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am. The baby weights 8lbs 3oz.

“The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.

“Her Royal highness and her child are both doing well.”
