The 57-year-old victim was also left with internal injuries and fractured ribs and remains in hospital.
The man was walking along West End Road at around 11.30pm with a 22-year-old friend when they met a woman they knew.
She introduced the pair to two men, who immediately began attacking them.
The 57-year-old was also repeatedly punched in the face and the 22-year-old was hit as he tried to step in.
The younger victim suffered a broken jaw, as well as bruises and abrasions to his head.
The men are both white and in their early twenties with short dark hair. The first was around 6ft tall and slim with a local accent, and wore a white hooded coat, jeans and trainers.
The second was 5ft 10ins and stocky, and wore a black hooded top.
