Officers were called shortly before 4am after a 22-year-old woman who went to the A&E department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital told staff she had been raped.
A scene watch is in place in Chain Street and Supt Robin Rickard, local area commander for Reading, said: “At this time we are carrying out a full and thorough investigation into this incident, and this will include reviewing CCTV in and around the area we believe the offence occurred to gather as much forensic evidence as possible.
"The scene watch will remain in place until we have concluded our enquiries.”
The victim is currently with specially trained officers going through the details of the incident, and Supt Rickard added: “I would like anyone who was in or around the Chain Street area this morning to come forward and speak to us as soon as possible and help us with our enquiries.”
