Six weeks of roadworks to start on Monday
MOTORISTS should brace themselves for six weeks of disruption when an £845,000 programme of roadworks gets under way across the Reading area on Monday.
The Reading Borough Council operation includes extensive resurfacing in London Road, which will closed between Cemetery Junction and Sutton Seeds roundabout on Saturday, August 11 for five days. The closure will last from 10am-8pm on the Saturday and 8am-8pm on the remaining four days.
With a stretch of Caversham Road already reduced to single-file traffic at different points between Chatham Street and Abbattoirs Road by a six week Thames Water pipe replacement programme, the summer promises headaches for drivers.
The council has pledged to make "every effort" to maintain access for residents and businesses in Newtown during the London Road work but warned it may not be possible for "short periods". Drivers are urged to use the M4 Junction 11 to get in and out of town.
Transport leader Cllr Tony Page said: "This is again a significant investment by the Council on better road surfaces for all road users. There will be some disruption while the work takes place and we hope residents will understand this is an inevitable consequence of improving road surfaces."

Report commentIt's got to be done sometime so perhaps the school summer hols are the least worst time.
If you don't agree then make a better proposal and say how the extra cost will be funded.
