MOTORISTS heading westbound on the M4 this afternoon faced long tailbacks after a car overturned.

Fire crews from Whitley Wood and Dee Road stations answered the call at 3pm between junction 12 at Theale and junction 13 at Newbury after a dark-coloured Hyundai veered off the inside lane and collided with the barrier on the hard shoulder.

The male driver was already out of the car when the firefighters arrived and was checked out for superficial injuries by paramedics. The crews spent 35 minutes clearing the scene and making the damaged vehicle safe.

Dan Smith, watch manager at Whitley Wood station, said: "The driver was very lucky he hit the barrier on the hard shoulder. If he had gone a few more feet he would have ended up at the bottom of an embankment and things could have been much worse."
