HORDES of messages congratulating the Royals have flooded in following Reading's promotion to the promised land last night.

MPs, councillors and the vice-chancellor of Reading University rushed to congratulate the Royals this morning on their 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest.

Reading West MP Alok Sharma said: "Huge congratulations are due to Brian McDermott and the whole team for a superb season and winning promotion to the Premiership so convincingly.

"I noted in a debate in Parliament last year that we were a Premiership side temporarily in the Championship and like all Reading's well wishers I am chuffed to bits that Reading is back in the top league.

"In addition to the team, Reading owes much gratitude to the chairman, Sir John Madejski, for all he has done for the club over many years. I look forward to seeing Reading prosper in the Premiership over many coming seasons.

"And of course, good luck to the Royals in their final two games - it would be wonderful for them to end such a great season top of the league and take the Championship title as well!"

Reading university vice-chancellor, Sir David Bell, said: "I'd like to congratulate everyone associated with Reading Football Club on this magnificent achievement. "The team's form this year has been sensational and promotion is fully deserved. As a massive football fan I am particular pleased about my new local team doing so well.

"The Premiership is one of the world's most exciting and watched football leagues so the town's international profile will receive a massive boost. The people of Reading can take great pride in having a Premier League football club as well as a premier league university. I look forward to watching Reading compete against the best football clubs in the country and wish the club all the best for next season."

Steve Belam, general manager at The Oracle, said: "We are all delighted that Reading FC has been promoted to the Premier League, with the exciting news coming at the start of a great summer of celebration for the whole community in Reading.

"Our congratulations go to Brian McDermott and his whole team for the enormous efforts they have made this season. Having a Premier League football team in the town is something the whole community can get behind and feel proud of. We wish them every success in the top flight, come the start of the new season in August."

Reading Borough Council leader Jo Lovelock, who has asked council officers to speak to Reading Football Club about a civic event to mark the promotion, said: "Reading can be very proud of its football team and it's great that Reading's Madjeski Stadium will again be hosting some of the best clubs in the world.

"Many many congratulations to Brian McDermott and all the players and staff."
