Firefighters praised a family who used their smoke alarm to escape a dangerous fire this morning.

Green Watch, from Slough fire station, were to called to tackle the blaze at Richards Way, near Cippenham.

The cause of the fire, which started at 4am, is still being investigated by officers but is believed to have begun in a joined garage.

It quickly spread into the roof and into a parked van in the front garden but the occupants of the house were able to get out due to the smoke alarm alerting them.

Crew manager Barry Ashton confirmed that firefighters used breathing equipment and two hoses and said: "The family did the right thing with their smoke alarm.

"The last pump left at 8am but we're still investigating the cause of the fire."
