Airtrack scheme shelved by BAA

A CONTROVERCIAL airport rail-link has been shelved after issues surrounding its introduction could not be resolved.

BAA has withdrawn its proposal to introduce the Airtrack link that would have run between Heathrow and Staines via Egham and would have increased level crossing down-time in the town.

Heathrow's surface access director Allan Gregory said: "We've listened to the concerns raised by local residents about the impact of Airtrack and worked hard to try and resolve issues including level crossings.

" Despite our considerable efforts, including discussions with Network Rail and the local highway authorities, we have been unable to develop solutions which fully address these concerns."

Mr Gregory added that the proposal had been affected by the comprehensive spending review.
