SEARCH volunteers who can mean the difference between life and death are appealing for more people to join them.

Bracknell-based charity SEBEV Search and Rescue - originally known as South East Berkshire Emergency Volunteers - uses dogs and manpower to help the police search for missing people and hopes to double its membership from 25 to 50.

Team member Kris Manning said: "If you are looking for a volunteering role in Berkshire that keeps you fit and active, teaches you new skills, helps you build on skills you already have and most of all saves lives then SEBEV needs you.

"We need two different types of volunteer - those who want to become operational members and those who want to help us to perform essential tasks such as fundraising and publicity.

"For operational members we give full training in search techniques, navigation and first aid, all you need is a reasonable level of fitness, a love of the outdoors and a desire to help those in distress and suffering."

As part of the charity's recruitment drive that began this year, members have been interviewed by BBC Radio Berkshire presenter Andrew Peach and reporter Maggie Philbin, who visited its headquarters at Easthampstead Park Conference Centre.

The team meets at the centre every Thursday and for more information or to join visit www.sebev.co.uk or email membership@sebev.co.uk
