A CALL for the government to clamp down on clampers is being made by the Royal Borough.
Borough bosses claim overzealous clamping in private car parks has led to a 'tangible negative effect" on both the borough and tourism within it.
In a response to the government"s consultation paper on Licensing of Vehicle Immobilisation Business, the borough is submitting an addition proposal asking for licensed businesses to, in the first instance, only be permitted to issue parking tickets to offending vehicles and not be allowed to clamp.
Cllr Colin Rayner, lead member for transport and highways, said: 'Visitors and residents have been clamped, which leaves a bad taste in their mouths.
"Overzealous clamping has left people in tears and it is not helping tourism in the borough. We have tried every avenue to resolve this and now we"re hoping the government will be able to put an end to it.'
The proposal will be discussed by the Planning and Environment Overview and Scrutiny Panel on Monday.
