Girls race to victory

YOUNGSTERS at a school in Reading have proved they"re quick off the blocks by winning a county-wide athletics tournament.

The Under 16 girls" team at St Joseph"s Convent School beat off stiff competition from 16 other teams from across Berkshire to win the Yell Reading Schools" Athletics Cup.

A team from Wargrave secondary The Piggott School was second and The Abbey School in Reading was third.

St Joseph"s winning team included captain and county champion, Pippa Rogan, and Annukriti Shah, Antonia Trendell, Eleanor Millican, Hannah Cardoso, Emily Goldsmith, Chloe Marsh, Savanagh Figueira-Jones, Natalie Campbell Watson and Frances McSoley.

Judy Smith, St Joseph"s head of PE, said: 'It was a fantastic team performance with a few personal bests achieved and all the girls are to be congratulated on their commitment and excellent teamwork.'

Year 8 pupil Georgina Westwood, from Wargrave, and Year 10 student Pippa Rogan, from Woodley, enjoyed their own particular success at the Berkshire Schools" Multi-Event Championships at Palmer Park in Reading.

Competing in five events - High Jump, Long Jump, Shot, Hurdles and 800m, Georgina finished first in the U15 age group out of 30 competitors, and Pippa was runner-up in the U17 age group.

Both girls were delighted to find out they qualified to represent Berkshire in the South East of England Championships, held in Kingston next month.
