A FORMER scientist who painted to relax before becoming a full-time artist will be exhibiting at the Reading Contemporary Art Fair for the first time this year.

Maria Meerstadt uses oil on canvas to capture landscapes, animals and flowers and teaches adults to paint.

The Maidenhead painter said: “I have been attending the Reading Contemporary Art Fair for about 10 years and have always said I must give it a go.

“I was a immunologist based in drug research and was made redundant about four years ago and I decided to take the plunge and become a full time artist. I’m quite excited about exhibiting. It is a fantastic event with a great footfall and a good way to get work ‘out there’.”

Maria is self-taught and takes inspiration from the Old Masters through to modern Scottish painters.

She loves painting landscapes, particularly in Scotland, a country she “fell in love with”.

The Reading Contemporary Art Fair runs from April 24 to 26. The event opens on the Friday with a private viewing by invitation only.

Members of the public can buy tickets in advance via the website www.reading

contemporaryartfair.co.uk at £5 adults, £4 concessions, or on the door for £7/£6.

Children under five are admitted free and tickets for children aged 5-16 are prices at just £1.
