The hunt for a permanent location for the The Heights Primary School in Caversham has dragged on since the free school got the go ahead in September 2013.

As the school takes on more pupils and a new home has still not been found families feared they would outgrow the Gosbrook Road site in Caversham.

Reading East MP Rob Wilson announced today that he managed to ensure the EFA would fork out the funds in time for expansion works to take place over the summer.

Kerry Parr, member of the Parents of The Heights group, said: “We were putting quite a lot of pressure of Rob and we understand he has been working quite hard to get the EFA to agree to this.

“At the moment there are two spare classrooms joined together as a hall for assemblies and indoor games but in September when the new children arrive that would have yo used as classrooms again.

“Hopefully with this funding we will be able to maintain that communal space as well as enough classrooms as that is what makes the school so special at the moment.”

Last night more than 500 people attended a public meeting as the permanent home for the new free school still remains undecided.

With only the small plot of land to work with in Gosbrook Road many parents who have children at the school already feared that the delayed process would impact on the student’s learning experience.

Mr Wilson said: “I raised this as a matter of urgency with the EFA and following relentless lobbying on the school’s behalf I am delighted that the EFA has agreed to authorise funding for the early building expansion. This confirmation will I’m sure be welcomed by teachers and parents alike, who can now be assured of ample space and adequate facilities to maintain the levels of provision required. It will also give prospective parents the security and confidence they need to make this school their first preference.”

An exact figure is yet to be announced but it is thought that plans may include adding an extra storey to the existing temporary buildings which would require planning permission before construction.
