FIREFIGHTERS dived into the River Thames to pull a burning boat to shore early this morning.

The alarm was raised at around 5.30am after a pleasure boat was seen floating in the water completely engulfed in flames and crews from all four Reading Stations rushed to the river banks behind the Tesco in Napier Road.

Divers from the water rescue unit swam to the boat - which was called Markmanship - and tied ropes to it so firefighters could pull it to shore and use hose reels and main jets to douse the flames.

No one was on board at the time and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
