YESTERDAY was officially the coldest and wettest late August Bank Holiday in more than 20 years.

That is according to academics at Reading University after its weather station recorded 19.2mm of rain during the day making it the wettest since 22.6mm fell in 1992.

Dr Roger Brugge of the University’s Department of Meteorology said the day was also the dullest since the remnants of former-Hurricane Charlie brought 27.5mm of rain and no sunshine in 1986.

Dr Brugge added: “Overall, it was the wettest August Bank Holiday weekend for 22 years.”

It was the 50th late August Bank Holiday in England and Wales and only the bank holiday weekends in 1979 and 1980 were colder. The University also found that with six days to go, August this year has been an average of 1.5C below average, with ground frost being recorded on Sunday morning.

Dr Brugge said: “This would make it the first month since last November to be colder than average in Reading, while the month’s rainfall total as of Tuesday morning was about one and half times the normal fall for August at 77mm.”
